The Concept
The goal was to bring the conversation to life by creating an engaging animation that captured the warmth and humour of Zoe Ball's interview with Sir Michael Caine. To achieve this, I drew inspiration from the iconic film posters and title sequence designs of Saul Bass, which I thought perfectly encapsulated the themes and tones of the interview. I then built a series of small scenes that visualised Sir Michael Caine's storytelling, I then brought them to life through animation.
To give the animation an organic, hand-crafted feel in line with Saul Bass’s style, I incorporated ink textures and lowered the frame rate. This added a vintage charm that complemented the interview's narrative. Finally, I layered a light jazz track over the top, enhancing the mood of the animation. These videos did well on Radio 2's social channels, significantly boosting audience engagement for the show.
Tom Cruise
The second piece of audio to bring to life was Sir Michael Caine’s recount of his first meeting with Tom Cruise. The goal was to maintain the same design direction as the previous animation, inspired by Saul Bass's iconic style. However, the challenge this time was representing another notable figure—Tom Cruise—while maintaining the visual language from the previous video.
To achieve this, I created a simplified and stylised version of Tom Cruise, ensuring he was recognisable without breaking from the minimalist style of Saul Bass. By using bold, geometric shapes and maintaining the same ink textures and reduced frame rate, I was able to seamlessly incorporate him into the narrative. This video, like the previous one, enhanced audience engagement with its playful yet sophisticated animation, adding depth to Sir Michael Caine’s anecdote. You can watch the full video below.
