The Concept
BBC Timestamp was created to capitalise on all the exciting history documentaries and series from BBC Studios. The content revolves around archaeological history, with an emphasis on ancient history but with the flexibility to stretch and cover other periods of human history.
To achieve this, I designed a timeless brand identity that avoided aligning with any single era, instead embracing a broad representation of history. The chosen logo design drew inspiration from hieroglyphs, ancient symbols, and runes, set against earthy, textured backgrounds to evoke an organic feel.
Once the logo was finalised, I crafted six background variations, each representing a key historical period—The Stone Age, Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, The Middle Ages, The Tudor Period, and The Renaissance. These backgrounds are used as the YouTube header on the channel's home page.
Template Creation
Using Essential Graphics, I developed templates that allowed editors to easily customise videos according to the historical period featured. For instance, I created endboards that aligned with six key backgrounds—The Stone Age, Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, The Middle Ages, The Tudor Period, and The Renaissance. This enabled editors to select the appropriate endboard, maintaining visual cohesion throughout each video.
Additionally, I designed customisable assets such as subtitles, astons, title cards, and subscribe buttons, all tailored to adapt seamlessly to the video's context. I also created a series of still thumbnails with customisable options, ensuring brand cohesion on the YouTube channel. To complete the project, I developed a comprehensive style guide, which serves as a reference for maintaining consistent branding across all content.
